Iowa BEST: Behavioral, Equitable, Social-Emotional, Trauma-Informed Health in Schools Summit
The Iowa BEST Summit is designed to highlight educators’ collective need to bolster support and care across the educational system, and to build shared capacity to get there. The sessions will deliver resources and practical solutions around social-emotional-behavioral health. #IowaBEST2021

Dr. Schanna Smalls

Department of Defense Education Activity
Dr. Schanna Smalls is currently an Education Program Specialist with the Department of Defense Education Activity (DoDEA). Her prior role with DoDEA was as a Headquarters Counseling Instructional Systems Specialist where she created, implemented, and managed the programming for DoDEA’s worldwide school counseling program. During her 22 years in education, she served as a Business Education teacher, school counselor, school administrator, a district administrator and had various appointments on state advisory boards. In addition, she was a community college adjunct instructor, a crisis counselor, a veteran’s advocate, and a Suicide Prevention educator and interventionist.

Dr. Smalls is a US Army and Army National Guard veteran. Currently, her work in DoDEA’s Partnership and Resources division allows her to support the myriad needs of military-connected families in overseas locations where they do not have access to Department of Defense schools. The totality of her experiences gives her unique insight into the mental health concerns of the families she supports.
